You’ve been working hard, and you’re ready to pass the baton. You know what you’re looking for in a replacement: someone who can not only take on your day-to-day operational responsibilities but also take your company to the next level; but how do you find that person?
There are many ways to go about this. You can search on job boards or even post ads on your own website. However, these options are fairly traditional and don’t always yield the most innovative candidates. One way to get creative with finding a replacement is by thinking outside conventional interviewing methods.
We will explore how two successful companies took the classic interview style to the next level so that you can borrow a page from their book and rest assured that you are making the best choice when replacing yourself as head of the company.
Heineken
While any interview process aims to find the best candidate for the job, not all of them efficiently achieve this purpose.
Following a predictable pattern, the classic interview style could definitely be improved. Consisting of a face-to-face meeting between the job applicant and the employer, in a typical interview, the applicant is usually asked about their previous work experience and qualifications. Further, a series of questions are asked to assess their interpersonal skills.
Although popular, interviewing in this manner proves inefficient because it overlooks potential candidates that may not fit the traditional mold of a successful applicant.
Heineken, however, turned the whole interviewing process on its head in its 2013 recruiting campaign, The Candidate. Looking to recruit an intern for its event and sponsorship team, Heineken came up with a three-stage interview process consisting of putting applicants in unexpected situations ranging from giving first aid to the interviewer to participating in a fire rescue.
Of course, you don’t have to be that extreme. However, it is good to keep in mind that innovative interviews can be more engaging for the applicant, enabling them to showcase their knowledge and skills in a way that is more beneficial to the company.
Mogul
Mogul is an example of a company that emphasizes cultural fit in its recruiting process. They focused on candidates who would not only bring the skills needed but also fit into the company culture and bring diverse perspectives to the team.
Tiffany Pham, CEO, and founder of the women-only social media platform Mogul used an innovative method in her recruiting process instead of the typical interviewing process to make this possible.
The method consisted of having applicants spend a day in the office working with the team for which they were being considered. This allowed the applicants to not only get a better feel for the job they were applying for but also gave the team the opportunity to observe the applicant in their actual work environment. The hiring team could observe the applicant’s skills and abilities first-hand and was also able to determine if the applicant’s work ethic and attitude fit with the team’s culture. This process also allows the applicant to get a better understanding of the team dynamics and to determine if the job is the right fit for them.
By spending a day in the office, the applicant can interact with the team, learn more about the job role and duties, and get a sense of the office atmosphere and culture. This can help the applicant make a more informed decision when considering the job and helps the hiring team make a better decision.
Innovating the classical style in this way allows for finding more suitable applicants, as it broadens the hiring process to include more than just the standard face-to-face interviews.
Finding innovative candidates to replace yourself begins with identifying the kind of candidate you want to hire and then creating an interview process that can uncover those traits.
Innovating your recruitment strategy is one way to ensure that you’re hiring a new employee who will be able to make an impact on your company’s culture and help it thrive for years to come!
